News update from John Stevens, Rejoin EU Party candidate, Runcorn & Helsby by-election

Comment from John Stevens, former MEP and Rejoin EU candidate in the Runcorn & Helsby by-election on May 1st, on a report (link below) that Reform UK candidate Sarah Pochin’s husband’s family firm failed because of Brexit:

“It's quite astonishing that someone who knows from direct personal experience how disastrous leaving the EU has been for Britain should be running for Parliament for the party led by the man who brought us Brexit. This shows how Reform UK is not a vehicle for securing sound policies to help the British people,” Stevens said.

John Stevens extended his condolences on the death of Pope Francis to the congregations of St Edward the Confessor and The Holy Spirit Church in the parish of St Maximilian Kolbe, Our Lady Mother of the Saviour, Runcorn, St Luke’s Frodsham and the wider Catholic community in the UK and overseas. “Even for those of no religious faith, the Papacy remains probably the most profound reminder of the unity provided by the Christian roots of Europe’s shared civilisation,” Stevens said. “In particular, Pope Francis offered a constant, powerful critique of the plutocratic power which now threatens that civilisation.”

Commenting on Monday’s exceptional US financial-market falls, Stevens said:
“The latest turmoil in financial markets, which has seen pronounced weakness in the US currency and government debt (dragging down sterling and gilts relative to the euro and EU government debt), has been triggered by suggestions President Trump wishes to end the current politically independent status of the US central bank, the Federal Reserve.

“The UK faced similar problems when Liz Truss tried to blame the Bank of England for the market reaction to her ill-starred budget. Central bank independence is as critical to a free-market economy as judicial independence is to a free society. Unsurprisingly, Reform UK has attacked both, imitating once again the policies pursued by the 'Make America Great Again' (MAGA) campaign in the US.

“The exceptional independence of the European Central Bank, one institution dealing with 20 separate national governments, is a key reason why the euro continues to appreciate in value compared to sterling and why even Greece can now borrow in international markets at more than 1% less than the UK. Something all voters in Runcorn and Helsby who have debt, or who are savers, should think about very seriously. Joining the euro will of course be one of the benefits of re-joining the EU.”

The Rejoin EU Party is campaigning to re-join the EU because we believe re-joining is the only way to solve the multiple problems Brexit has created. Brexit is broken and it’s breaking our country too. All the promises on which Brexit was sold to the electorate in 2016 were nonsense. Far from reducing red tape and providing £350m a week for the NHS, Brexit makes trading with the crucial European market more complex, difficult and expensive and threatens to reduce funding for public services. If you agree Brexit is making our country poorer, less tolerant and less united, join us and send a message to Westminster that you want your EU membership back, with all its freedoms and benefits.
