Republic’s protest on Wednesday was a huge success. The turnout of royalists was pretty small, dwarfed by tourists. A few hundred republicans were there at both ends of the Royal Mile and along the route.
The protest made headlines around the UK as our chants of ‘Not My King’ were heard ringing through the cathedral as Charles received the Scottish Honours.
All the press and broadcasters covered the protests, which became a central part of the coverage of the day’s events. The protests were good-natured, loud and effective, and the police were a great deal better than in London on the day of the coronation.
More protests, more events
We’re working on more events and protests, and growing a network of local activism around the UK.
We will soon announce the first Republic Tour dates, when I’ll be traveling to towns and cities around the country to talk to people about my book Abolish The Monarchy, the reasons why the monarchy must go, how we get rid of it and what we get in its place.
You can find all the best places to buy the book on the Penguin website.
We also have the 2023 Members’ Day in October, details on the website.
Working with our allies
We’ve recently been speaking to our UK allies in Labour for a Republic, Our Republic, Cymru Republic and No More Royals. We’re going to be liaising with all of them as part of our push to maintain the momentum we’ve had since the coronation.
Thank you.
A huge thank you to the hundreds who turned up at the protests on Wednesday, and to all our supporters and members who make this campaign possible.
Bye for now!
