Starmer's Labour blocks youth mobility too!
The UK recently said no to the EU's idea for a “youth mobility scheme.” Both the Conservatives and Labour rejected it, despite the fact that it would make it easier for young people to live and work in EU countries after Brexit.
What's the scheme about? It would help people aged 18-30 get visas to stay in another country for several years. The UK already has similar deals with over 10 countries. But these schemes have rules and are far from inclusive and comprehensive.
Why did the EU offer this to the UK? It wants its young people to have more opportunities in the UK after Brexit – because it makes sense.
It was no surprise that the Tory government said no to the EU's offer, fearing that a return to pre-Brexit free movement would deter their dwindling band of Brexit supporters from voting for them.
However, Keir Starmer's Labour refused the offer too. The Labour leadership doesn't want to bring back free movement either, despite the fact that the party's supporters and the wider electorate want it.
The Rejoin EU Party believes both parties are denying this country's young people a European future in favour of their own narrow political interests. It also believes that everyone should have the right to travel, work and live freely in mainland Europe via a rapid return to the single market and the EU.
Could the UK still do a youth-mobility deal with the EU after the election? It's unlikely as things stand. That's why voters need an alternative. It's why we are standing on the PR-based London-wide list ballot in the London Assembly elections on May 2 and will also take part in the General Election when it comes. In the London Assembly, voters can cast their third list vote for the Rejoin EU Party without fear of “splitting the vote” in the mayoral and constituency ballots.
