Trump's tirade against Zelensky proves UK is better off re-joining EU – and MPs must debate it, Rejoin EU Party says
The appalling treatment of Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky by Donald Trump and JD Vance underlines why the UK needs to re-join its true allies in the EU, the Rejoin EU Party says.
Trump and Vance's verbal attacks on Zelensky in a White House press conference were entirely inappropriate and unwarranted, given the fact that Ukraine has simply been forced to defend itself against an unprovoked invasion by Vladimir Putin's Russia, Rejoin EU says.
The affair shows the UK and other Western nations can no longer rely on Trump's US to defend their interests and that the UK's best future lies in re-joining the EU and restoring the political influence and clout it would have as part of a larger European group.
However, Keir Starmer risks undermining prospects for stronger defence ties with the EU by continuing to reject the economic means to underpin them, namely re-joining the single market, customs union and restoring free movement.
“The way Trump treated Zelensky was very different to the way he treated Starmer,” Rejoin EU Party leader Brendan Donnelly said. “I would prefer to be represented by someone like Zelensky in dealings with Trump, rather than a prime minister who tells Trump what he wants to hear.”
Parliamentary officials have now set March 24 as the date for a Westminster debate on re-joining the EU after a petition demanding an application for full membership ASAP topped the 100,000-signature threshold required and now stands at nearly 124,000.
The Rejoin EU Party, which has played a major role in mobilising support for the petition, is launching a campaign to encourage people to write to their MPs – particularly if they're Labour – urging them to attend.
“For years, politicians have ignored the reality that Brexit has failed,” Donnelly said.
“This debate proves the public is waking up and demanding action. We're urging MPs to respond by attending the debate and acknowledging that re-joining is the only way to end the economic and political chaos Brexit has caused.

The Rejoin EU Party is campaigning to re-join the EU because we believe re-joining is the only way to solve the multiple problems Brexit has created. Brexit is broken and it’s breaking our country too. All the promises on which Brexit was sold to the electorate in 2016 were nonsense. Far from reducing red tape and providing £350m a week for the NHS, Brexit makes trading with the crucial European market more complex, difficult and expensive and threatens to reduce funding for public services. If you agree Brexit is making our country poorer, less tolerant and less united, join us and send a message to Westminster that you want your EU membership back, with all its freedoms and benefits.
