Brexit-fuelled economic problems show UK needs to re-join EU, Rejoin EU Party candidate in Runcorn & Helsby, John Stevens says

Economic bad news for the UK has been stacking up this week and the only way to end it is to re-join the single market, the customs union and the EU, former MEP and Rejoin EU Party candidate in Runcorn & Helsby, John Stevens, says.

On Tuesday, the International Monetary Fund downgraded its forecast for UK economic growth in 2025 and on Wednesday, the Office for National Statistics said public sector borrowing in March was the third highest for that month since monthly records began in 1993, with public-sector net debt staying at levels last seen in the early 1960s.

On Thursday, the S&P Global Flash UK PMI showed a decline in private-sector output for the first time in one-and-a-half years in April amid the sharpest fall in new export orders since May 2020.

On Friday, ONS retail sales figures for March showed retail sales up on a quarterly and annual basis, but still slightly below pre-pandemic levels, while GfK consumer confidence data indicated confidence falling four points in April to minus 23.

Brexit, backed by Nigel Farage's Reform UK and others, has damaged the economy, increasing interest rates and pressure on public finances and causing the government to put up taxes and cut services, John Stevens said.

“I want the people of Runcorn & Helsby to have lower interest rates, a better economy, a lesser risk of tax increases and cuts in public services, better immigration control and a more secure environment and defence in the face of a very dangerous world,” Stevens said. “All these things will be easier to achieve if we re-join the EU.”

The Rejoin EU Party is campaigning to re-join the EU because we believe re-joining is the only way to solve the multiple problems Brexit has created. Brexit is broken and it’s breaking our country too. All the promises on which Brexit was sold to the electorate in 2016 were nonsense. Far from reducing red tape and providing £350m a week for the NHS, Brexit makes trading with the crucial European market more complex, difficult and expensive and threatens to reduce funding for public services. If you agree Brexit is making our country poorer, less tolerant and less united, join us and send a message to Westminster that you want your EU membership back, with all its freedoms and benefits.
